A skoolie or bus conversion is a commercial vehicle that someone cut holes in. Sometimes that someone was a professional conversion company with engineering behind the work. Often it was an owner with a plasma cutter and enthusiasm, and the structural consequences of that show up years later.

We repair both, and a substantial share of the work is correcting what the original conversion did rather than fixing new damage.

Fans, vents, solar mounts and AC units cut into a bus roof that had none, frequently sealed with materials chosen for availability rather than suitability.

Electrical System Deficiencies

Conversion electrical is where the most alarming work appears: undersized cable, missing fusing, house circuits sharing chassis grounds and residential wiring methods used in a vehicle.

Body Corrosion at Conversion Cuts

Every cut through original bodywork breaks the factory corrosion protection. Where the conversion did not restore it, rust advances from inside the joint and appears years later as bubbling paint.

Assessing an Existing Conversion

When a converted bus arrives with a specific complaint, we look at the conversion as a whole, because the complaint is frequently a symptom of a broader structural or electrical issue.

Cracks at window corners after a roof raise are not a paint problem. Intermittent 12 volt faults are usually not a component problem. We report what we find honestly, including when the finding is larger than what you brought it in for.

Structural Correction and Reinforcement

Correcting an unengineered roof raise means reinforcing the splice points properly, which usually involves adding gusseting and, in bad cases, redoing splices entirely.

We test and correct rather than patch, because a system with a dozen splices becomes a permanent source of intermittent faults.

My skoolie is cracking at the window corners. What causes that?

Almost certainly an unengineered roof raise. Raising a bus roof cuts every vertical structural member and splices in extensions, and where those splices were made without proper reinforcement the body loses torsional rigidity. The stress concentrates at window corners and cracks appear there first. It is a structural problem rather than a paint problem, and the correction is reinforcing or redoing the splices.

Do you repair fiberglass and body damage on vintage bus conversions?

Yes, including Prevost, MCI and older coach conversions. On vintage units the challenge is usually parts availability rather than technique, since panels and trim have been discontinued for decades. We fabricate replacements by patterning from the opposite side or from what survives of the original, which for most vintage conversions is the only path to a proper repair.

Should I have my conversion inspected before buying it?

Strongly recommended, and it is inspection work we perform in shop. The things that matter most are invisible from a walkthrough: whether a roof raise was properly reinforced, whether window deletes carry real structure, whether the electrical system is safe, and whether corrosion protection was restored at every cut. A conversion that looks beautiful inside can have structural and electrical problems that cost more to correct than the bus is worth.
