Frame Straightening and Structural Repair Serving Long Beach

Frame straightening returns a bent chassis or shifted body structure to factory dimension using hydraulic pulls anchored to a fixed rack, verified by measurement rather than by eye. At OCRV Center the work runs $3,000 to $18,000 on most vehicles and up to $20,000 or more on heavily modified commercial trucks, and it is always performed in shop because a pull needs a floor anchor to react against.

A frame is a geometry problem, not a cosmetic one. When rails twist, sag or shift laterally, every component bolted to them inherits the error. Axles stop tracking straight. Body mounts load unevenly. Slide rooms that used to seal cleanly start binding on one corner. Tires wear on an inside edge no alignment can correct because the alignment is fighting a bent reference.

None of that is fixable by adjusting what sits on top of the frame. It is only fixable by putting the frame back where the manufacturer put it, and confirming with a tape and a measuring system that it actually went back.

How We Know a Frame Is Actually Bent

Owners usually arrive with symptoms rather than a diagnosis. The vehicle pulls. A door that used to close now needs a shoulder. There is a new crack in the fiberglass above a window. Tires are scrubbing. Any one of those can have another cause, and diagnosing by symptom alone is how shops end up selling frame work that was never needed.

We measure. Datum points along the rails are compared against published specification where the chassis manufacturer provides one, and against side to side symmetry where they do not. Diagonal measurements catch a twist that straight line measurements will miss entirely. The numbers either show a deviation or they do not, and we show you the numbers.

Pulling, Sectioning and Replacement

A pull uses hydraulic rams anchored to the rack to apply controlled force in the exact opposite vector of the impact, taken slowly and re measured between stages. Steel has memory and it also has a limit. Pulled past its yield, a rail will crack rather than straighten.

When a rail is kinked past the point where a pull will recover it, the section gets cut out and replaced. Sectioning is done at manufacturer approved locations with the specified weld process, because a splice in the wrong place moves the failure point instead of removing it. On some chassis the correct answer is a full rail replacement, and we will tell you when that is the case even though it is the expensive answer.

Unibody and Monocoque Considerations

Sprinter vans, ProMasters and Transits are unibody. There is no separate frame to pull. Correction happens through the shell itself, anchored at factory pinch weld points, and the tolerance window is much tighter than on a ladder frame.

Bus conversions and some Class A coaches use a semi monocoque body over a rail chassis, which means damage can live in either structure or both. We measure both before committing to a repair plan.

Modified and Heavily Loaded Vehicles

Vehicles with lift kits, aftermarket suspension, added tanks, lift gates or heavy towing history do not measure the same as they did leaving the factory, and pretending otherwise produces a repair that fails inspection or fails in service.

We document the modifications first, establish what the pre loss geometry actually was, and pull to that. On commercial units used for heavy towing we also inspect the hitch and receiver mounting structure, because a frame impact almost always travels through those mounts.

Verification and Documentation

A pull is not finished when it looks right. It is finished when the measurements land back inside tolerance and stay there after the rams come off, because steel relaxes.

You receive the before and after measurement record. Carriers receive the same record, which is the difference between a supplement that gets approved and one that generates a phone argument.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does frame straightening cost on a semi truck?

Commercial truck frame work at OCRV Center generally runs $3,000 to $20,000 or more. A mild rail sag corrected with a staged pull sits at the low end. A kinked rail requiring section replacement, or a unit with a lift gate, sleeper and aftermarket accessories that all have to come off and go back on, sits at the high end. The measurement pass tells us which one you have before you commit to anything.

Can a bent RV frame actually be repaired, or is it a total loss?

Most bent frames are repairable. The question is whether the repair cost plus the rest of the damage exceeds the actual cash value of the coach, which is what drives a total loss decision. On a late model diesel pusher the answer is usually repair. On a twenty year old gas coach with an equivalent bend it is often a total. We measure and price it so the decision is made from real numbers rather than from a guess.

How do you find hidden frame damage?

By measuring rather than by looking. Hidden frame damage rarely announces itself visually, especially on a coach where the rails are behind skirting and storage bays. We pull the access panels, set up datum points and compare against specification or side to side symmetry, including diagonal measurements that reveal twist. A rail can be visually straight and still be a half inch out of position, and that half inch is what has been causing your slide to bind.

Will straightening the frame fix my slide out and door problems?

If the frame movement is what caused them, yes. That is the usual sequence: the structure shifts, and the components mounted to it stop lining up. Once the geometry is back in tolerance, slides and doors typically return to correct operation, though seals and rollers that were damaged while operating out of alignment often still need replacement. We test slide and door operation after the pull and quote any remaining component work separately.
