OCRV Center services trailer electric brakes, axles, wheel bearings, leaf and torsion suspension and air ride systems on recreational vehicles, trailers and commercial fleet units. Work runs $300 for a bearing repack to $6,500 for axle replacement or a full air suspension repair.

Suspension and brake work on trailers gets deferred more than any other category of maintenance, and it produces more highway breakdowns than any other category too. The reason is that the components are out of sight, they degrade slowly, and nothing feels wrong right up until something is very wrong.

A wheel bearing that has been running dry for six months gives essentially no warning at 65 miles an hour on the I-405 with a loaded fifth wheel behind you.

Electric Trailer Brakes

Electric drum brakes on trailers wear, and the magnets that actuate them wear faster than the shoes. A magnet worn past its face no longer generates the pull the controller is asking for, and the symptom is a trailer that seems to brake fine at low speed and does very little at highway speed.

We test actual current draw at each brake rather than just inspecting the shoes, because a brake with plenty of lining and a dead magnet is contributing nothing. Adjusters seize as well, particularly on units that spend most of the year parked, and a seized adjuster means the shoes never come into range.

Wheel Bearings and Hub Service

Bearing repack on a trailer is inexpensive maintenance and catastrophically expensive to skip. Grease breaks down, seals fail, water gets in, and the bearing runs until it welds itself to the spindle.

When that happens the repair is no longer a bearing. It is a spindle, which frequently means an axle. We service bearings on an annual interval for units that tow regularly, and we inspect the spindle condition whenever a hub is off rather than just replacing the bearing and moving on.

Signs a Bearing Is Failing

Heat is the primary indicator. A hub noticeably hotter than the others after a drive is a bearing on the way out. Grease slung onto the inside of the wheel means the seal has failed. A rumble or growl that changes with speed but not with braking is a bearing rather than a brake.

Any of those means the unit should not be towed further until it is inspected.

Leaf, Torsion and Air Ride Systems

Leaf spring suspensions on trailers fail at the equalizer and the shackle bushings long before the springs themselves give out. Worn bushings let the axles walk, which produces tire wear that looks like an alignment problem and is not.

Torsion axles have no serviceable suspension components at all. When the rubber cords inside lose their resilience the axle sags and the only repair is replacement. Air ride on coaches and commercial units fails at bags, lines and the leveling valves, and a system that will not hold overnight is usually a bag or a fitting rather than the compressor everyone suspects first.

Axle Replacement and Alignment

Bent axles on trailers come from curb strikes, potholes and overloading. The symptom is tire wear on one edge that no amount of tire rotation corrects.

We measure axle alignment and camber before recommending replacement, because a mildly bent axle can sometimes be straightened while a severely bent one cannot, and telling the difference requires measurement rather than a visual check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should trailer wheel bearings be repacked?

Annually for a trailer that tows regularly, or every 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Units that sit for long periods actually need it more rather than less, because grease separates and seals dry out while parked. Bearing service is inexpensive maintenance, and the failure mode when it is skipped is a bearing that welds itself to the spindle, which turns a modest service into an axle replacement.

My trailer brakes feel weak at highway speed. What causes that?

Usually worn brake magnets rather than worn shoes. A magnet worn past its face cannot generate the pull the controller is requesting, so the brakes feel adequate at low speed and do very little when you actually need them. Seized adjusters are the other common cause, since the shoes never come into range of the drum. My air suspension will not hold overnight. Is the compressor bad?

Usually not, though it is the part everyone suspects first. A system that leaks down overnight is far more often a failing air bag or a leaking fitting than a compressor, and the compressor is simply running more to compensate. We leak test the bags, lines and leveling valves under pressure to find the actual loss point. Replacing a compressor that was never the problem is a common and expensive misdiagnosis.
