Paint Correction and Ceramic Coating for RVs and Fleets
About 10 min left
Paint correction machine polishes oxidized or scratched clear coat back to gloss, and ceramic coating then seals that corrected finish against ultraviolet exposure and contamination. At OCRV Center correction and coating runs $1,200 to $8,500 on recreational vehicles depending on length and how far the finish has degraded.
Southern California is hard on paint in a specific way. Constant ultraviolet load breaks down clear coat from the top down, and the marine layer deposits salt that sits on the surface until the sun bakes it in. A coach stored outdoors in Long Beach ages its finish considerably faster than the same coach stored inland.
Correction recovers what is still recoverable. Coating slows down what happens next. Neither reverses clear coat that has already failed through to the color, which is a repaint, and we will tell you which situation you are in before quoting.
What Paint Correction Can and Cannot Fix
Correction removes a controlled amount of clear coat to level the surface. It fixes oxidation, swirl marks, wash induced marring, light scratching and water spot etching, because all of those live within the clear layer.
It cannot fix a scratch you can catch a fingernail in, because that has gone through the clear. It cannot fix clear that is already peeling or flaking, because there is nothing sound left to level. Those need refinish work, and any shop telling you a polish will handle them is selling you a temporary illusion.
Measuring Before Cutting
We take clear coat thickness readings before starting. RV finishes vary widely in film build, and a coach that has been corrected twice already may not have enough clear left to survive a third pass.
If the readings come back thin we will recommend a lighter single stage polish or none at all, because cutting through clear turns a cosmetic problem into a refinish bill.
Multi Stage Compounding and Polishing
A correction is a sequence, not a single operation. A cutting compound with an aggressive pad removes defects. A polish with a finer pad removes the haze the compound left. On dark or deeply degraded finishes a third refining stage follows.
Skipping stages is the most common shortcut in this work and it shows up as holograms and buffer trails that become obvious in direct sun about a week later, once the filling oils in a cheap all in one product wash away.
Ceramic Coating and What It Actually Does
A ceramic coating is a semi permanent sacrificial layer that bonds to the clear coat. It makes the surface easier to clean, adds chemical resistance, provides meaningful ultraviolet protection and holds gloss considerably longer than a wax.
It does not make paint scratch proof. It does not eliminate washing. It does not prevent rock chips. Coatings are oversold constantly, and setting the expectation correctly is part of the job. On a large coach the practical benefit is real: significantly less oxidation over a five year window and dramatically easier removal of road film and bug strike.
Fleet Application and Maintenance Intervals
On commercial fleets the value of coating is washing labor, not appearance. A coated box truck releases road grime with far less contact time, which matters when a fleet gets washed weekly.
We advise a correction and coating cycle rather than treating it as a one time purchase, with an annual inspection and a maintenance topper applied where the coating has worn at high contact areas.

Our Process
- 1
Inspection and Measurement
Finish evaluated under corrected lighting, clear coat thickness measured across representative panels.
- 2
Decontamination
Full wash, chemical iron removal and mechanical decontamination to strip embedded contaminants.
- 3
Test Panel
A single section corrected first to establish the least aggressive combination that achieves the result.
- 4
Correction
Compound and polish stages carried across the vehicle with defect removal verified per panel.
- 5
Surface Prep
Panel wipe to remove all polishing oils so the coating bonds to bare clear rather than to residue.
- 6
Coating and Cure
Ceramic applied by hand in controlled sections and cured indoors before the vehicle is released.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ceramic coating worth it on an RV?
On a large coach stored outdoors in Southern California, yes, primarily for ultraviolet protection and wash time. A coated sidewall oxidizes far more slowly and releases road film and bug strike with much less contact time, which matters when the surface area is 40 feet long. What it does not do is prevent scratches or rock chips, and any shop implying otherwise is overselling it.
Can paint correction fix oxidation on my old motorhome?
If the oxidation is in the clear coat, yes, and the result is often dramatic. If the clear has already failed through to the color layer, so it is peeling, flaking or chalking down to primer, correction cannot recover it and refinish is the only real answer. We take clear coat thickness readings before quoting so you get told which situation you are actually in rather than paying for a polish that will not hold.
How often can an RV be corrected?
Every correction removes a measured amount of clear coat, so the number is finite and depends on the original film build. Most factory RV finishes tolerate two to four corrections over their life. That is why we measure thickness first, and why we start with the least aggressive combination that achieves the result rather than reaching for the heaviest compound.
How long does a ceramic coating last on a vehicle stored outside?
Under Southern California conditions, expect three to five years on a properly prepared surface, with high contact areas such as the front cap and the lower sidewalls wearing first. Storage matters more than product brand. A covered coach holds a coating meaningfully longer than one sitting uncovered. We recommend annual inspection and a maintenance topper on worn areas rather than treating it as permanent.
