Panel repair replaces or sections damaged body panels, fenders and quarter panels on recreational and commercial vehicles, with the replacement bonded or welded at manufacturer approved seams and refinished to match. Panel work is the most frequently botched category of body repair, and the failure is almost always the same: the seam was placed where it was convenient rather than where the manufacturer designed the structure to accept a joint.
Body panels carry load. On a unibody van they carry a lot of it. Cutting a quarter panel at an arbitrary line and welding a section in creates a new stress concentration, and it will crack, usually within two years and usually at the worst possible place.
Sectioning at Approved Seams
Manufacturers publish sectioning locations for a reason. Those points sit where the structure has redundancy, away from load paths, and the specified weld type at each one is chosen to restore the original strength of that joint.
We work to those locations. Where the manufacturer publishes no sectioning procedure, which is common on recreational vehicles, we replace the full panel rather than inventing a seam, because a guess at structural geometry is not something worth saving labor hours on.
Bonded Panels Versus Welded Panels
Modern vehicles use structural adhesive as much as they use welds, and the two are not interchangeable. Adhesive distributes load across the whole flange rather than concentrating it at weld points, and it also acts as a corrosion barrier between mating surfaces.
Replacing a bonded panel with welds alone creates both a strength problem and a corrosion problem. We follow the original attachment method, including bond line thickness, because a bond line squeezed too thin is nearly as bad as no bond at all.
Fiberglass and Composite Panels
Fiberglass panels on coaches are bonded, not fastened, and repair means a proper laminated scarf joint with the bevel ratio the laminate thickness requires.
A butt joint filled with resin is not a structural repair regardless of how good it looks after paint. It is a visible failure waiting for the first flex cycle.
Discontinued Panels and Fabrication
For coaches and commercial bodies out of production, panels are frequently unavailable. We fabricate replacements by patterning from the opposite side or from the damaged original, forming the material and matching the body contour.
Fabricated panels take considerably longer than bolt on replacements, and we are upfront about that in the estimate. The alternative for most owners is a vehicle that cannot be repaired at all.
Corrosion Protection at Every Seam
Every cut, weld and fastener penetration is a corrosion entry point. Factory corrosion protection is applied during manufacturing in ways a repair cannot replicate exactly, so it has to be deliberately restored.
We apply weld through primer at mating surfaces before joining, seam sealer at every joint, and cavity wax inside enclosed sections. This is the step most commonly skipped and the one that determines whether the repair is still sound in ten years.
