RV furnaces are simple, and their failure modes are predictable enough that diagnosis is usually straightforward. The complicating factor is that they have a safety interlock chain, and any link failing produces the same symptom: the blower runs and nothing lights.
That chain exists for good reason, since a furnace in an enclosed living space with a combustion process needs to prove airflow before it ignites. But it means the fault could be at several points and only testing tells you which.
The Ignition Sequence and Where It Fails
A forced air furnace starts the blower, waits for the sail switch to confirm airflow, opens the gas valve, sparks the igniter, and proves flame. If any of those steps fails, the sequence halts.
The most common failure is the sail switch, a small vane in the airflow path that closes a contact when air moves. Dust, corrosion or a slightly weak blower and the switch never closes, so the gas valve never opens.
Blower Motor Wear
A blower that has slowed with age may still sound like it is working while no longer moving enough air to close the sail switch.
That produces an intermittent fault: the furnace works on a cold morning when the motor is unloaded and fails later, which owners understandably find baffling.
Gas Supply and Regulator Issues
A furnace draws more gas than most other appliances in a coach, so it is often the first thing to fail when supply is marginal. A regulator that is weak, a tank that is nearly empty, or a line with a restriction will run the stove fine and fail to sustain the furnace.
We test gas pressure under load rather than static, because a static reading looks correct right up until the furnace asks for real flow.
Ducting, Registers and Uneven Heat
Coaches heat unevenly when ducting has been crushed, disconnected or was marginal from the factory. A bedroom that never warms up while the living area is too hot is a distribution problem, not a furnace capacity problem.
We inspect duct runs where accessible, seal leaking joints and rebalance registers. Duct leakage into an underbelly or a cabinet cavity wastes a substantial share of furnace output and is invisible from inside.
Hydronic Heating Systems
AquaHot and similar hydronic systems heat a glycol loop with a diesel burner or electric element and circulate it to heat exchangers throughout the coach, providing both space heat and domestic hot water.
They are excellent and they are complex. Faults appear in the burner, the circulation pump, zone valves, the control system or the loop itself, and diagnosis takes longer than on a forced air unit. On coaches equipped with these, we allow for that in scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions
My RV furnace blower runs but it never lights. What is wrong?
Most often the sail switch, a small vane in the airflow path that has to close before the gas valve will open.
