Cabinet problems in a coach fall into three groups, and telling them apart determines whether you are spending $500 or $5,000. There are hardware problems, where hinges and slides have worn. There are box problems, where the cabinet structure itself has loosened or swelled from moisture. And there are attachment problems, where the cabinet is coming away from the wall it is fastened to.

Owners describe all three the same way: the cabinet doors will not stay right.

Hardware Failure and Correct Replacement

Continuous road vibration works fasteners loose and wears hinge pivots oval. A door that sags, rubs or will not stay closed is usually reporting hinge wear rather than a warped door.

Replacing residential grade hinges with the same residential grade hinges produces the same failure in another two years. We fit hardware suited to the vibration environment, and on drawers we fit positive latching slides, because an unlatched drawer that opens during a hard stop is genuinely dangerous.

Water Damaged Cabinet Boxes

Coach cabinet boxes are usually particle board or thin plywood with a laminate face. Particle board that has been wet swells irreversibly, loses all fastener holding strength and never recovers.

Under a galley sink or beside a bathroom wall, that is the most common cabinet failure we see. The repair is replacing the affected panel or the whole box, and finding the leak that wet it, because the leak is still there.

Refacing as an Alternative to Replacement

Where the boxes are structurally sound but the coach looks dated, refacing replaces doors, drawer fronts and visible surfaces while keeping the existing boxes.

It costs roughly a third of full replacement, adds far less weight and takes a fraction of the time. It is the highest value interior change available on most coaches.

Countertop Materials for Coach Use

Laminate is the factory standard: light, inexpensive and easy to replace, but it fails at seams if water gets in and the edge banding lifts over time.

Solid surface performs well in coaches because it is repairable, seamless and moderate in weight. Thin porcelain is excellent but requires careful support. Granite is the material owners ask for most and the one we most often talk them out of, because of weight and its intolerance for the unsupported spans typical of coach galley layouts.

Cabinet Attachment to Coach Structure

A cabinet that is pulling away from the wall is not a cabinet problem. It is an attachment problem, and often a substrate problem, meaning the wall it was fastened to has gotten soft.

We check what the fasteners are actually going into. Refastening a cabinet into wet or delaminated substrate accomplishes nothing, and that situation calls for wall repair before the cabinet goes back.
